Can anyone tell me what "set as external grade" means in Bb 8?

From the Bb Manual: "If the System Administrator has made the Report Card Module available, students can add it to their My Institution tab.
The module will display the instructor's choice of each course’s grade. This is known as the External Grade in the Grade Center. A link will take students to the View Grades page of the Grade Center."
So in other words, the reason for the feature and the ability to set a column as "External" is to allow an instructor to define a different calculated column (other than the default "Total" column) to be reported to students on the Report Card Module.
